Under the new system
Patients who pay will typically pay around 50% of the value of their NHS treatment package.
There will be a maximum cap of £384.
People who are exempt from NHS charges will remain exempt.
Laboratory fees
Under the new system, patients who pay NHS charges will also need to pay the laboratory fee if their dental treatment involves laboratory-made items, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures.
Laboratory fees are separate from the NHS treatment charge and will reflect the cost of producing the dental appliance.
Changes to NHS Dental Care in Wales from 1 April 2026
From 1 April 2026, NHS dental services in Wales will change. The new approach is designed to make sure NHS dental care is provided based on oral health need, with a stronger focus on prevention and helping those who need treatment most.
What’s changing?
Appointments based on need.
Under the new system, how often you are seen will depend on your oral health and risk:
If you need active treatment or extra support to maintain your oral health, you’ll be seen more regularly.
If you have a healthy mouth and are at lower risk, you may be seen less often.
This helps the NHS focus appointments on patients who need them most.
NHS charges are changing.
If you pay for NHS dental treatment, charges will be calculated differently.
